Watch: Starling Marte ignored fitting advice from Mets fan before embarrassing strikeout
Starling Marte should have listened when a Mets fan behind home plate screamed not to swing at everything before a bases-loaded, game-ending strikeout.
As the halfway point of the season approaches, New York is on pace to match the record of the 1992 “Worst Team Money Could Buy” Mets. So you have to feel for fans who are watching in horror as the team finds new and painful ways to lose games.
On Thursday night, NY gave up a 2-0 lead to the Brewers but still had a good chance to tie the game or even win it in the bottom of the ninth. The bases were loaded with Starling Marte coming to the plate with two outs.
One fan sitting behind home plate understood exactly what could go wrong there and pleaded with Marte, “Don’t swing at everything!”
Marte did not listen. He literally swung at everything.
Mets fan’s prescient advice to Starling Marte went unheeded
The Julianne Moore-look-alike couldn’t have called it better. She knew Marte would approach his critical at-bat in the wrong way and tried her best to change fate. But the Mets’ ineptitude reigns.
The Mets blew a quality start from Max Scherzer, who went six innings with two runs allowed and nine strikeouts. Brett Baty and Brandon Nimmo hit back-to-back home runs in the third inning to account for the only two runs for their team.
The Brewers got out with a 3-2 victory and a series win 3-1. Losers of seven of their last 10, New York sits fourth in the NL East with a 36-45 record.
Mets fans behind the plate are more entertaining than the team these days. Just a few days ago a fan hilariously left his prime seat in a huff as New York melted down against the Phillies.
