USMNT news: Dest to Fulham, Aaronson joins Union, Gold Cup roundup
Today’s USMNT news includes Sergino Dest being linked with Fulham, Brenden Aaronson has completed his move to Union Berlin and the Stars and Stripes are into the semi-finals of the Gold Cup after defeating Canada on penalties.
USMNT news: Sergino Dest to Fulham
Many USMNT players have already secured their transfers this summer; Timothy Weah has signed for Juventus and Christian Pulisic is set to join AC Milan. Sergino Dest -who had an unsuccessful loan at Milan last season from Barcelona- is still waiting to see where his future will lie.
Dest was linked with Union Berlin but that appears to be no longer an option for the defender. However, the Spanish website, Mundo Deportivo, has reported that Fulham, Crystal Palace and even Manchester United are interested in Dest.
Fulham and Crystal Palace are both solid Premier League sides. At Craven Cottage he would be part of a back-line that already features fellow Americans Tim Ream and Antonee Robinson. Whilst at Selhurst Park Dest would play alongside another USMNT teammate, Chris Richards.
A transfer to Manchester United sounds unlikely as Dest has struggled for form in recent seasons. Although, Dest did play under Eric Ten Hag whilst at Ajax, so the United manager would know how to get the best out of him.
USMNT news: Brenden Aaronson moves to Union Berlin
Brenden Aaronson has been sent on loan to Union Berlin from Leeds United for next season. This is a great move for the American, as he is switching from a side that will be in the Championship, to a team that will be in the Champions League.
Speaking to Union’s official website on the move, Aaronson said “A year ago, I wouldn’t have believed that I would be here and able to play in the Champions League with Union. I’m looking forward to the year ahead with joy and confidence and want to help us have another successful season.”
USMNT news: Stars and Stripes defeat Canada
The USMNT defeated Canada on penalties to book their place in the semi-finals of the Gold Cup. It looked like the Stars and Stripes had won it in normal time when Brandon Vazquez scored with a header in the 88th minute. However, Steven Vitoria equalized for Canada from the penalty spot in added time.
The Canadians then took the lead in extra time through Jacob Shaffelburg. The USMNT needed an own-goal from Scott Kennedy to claim a 2-2 draw.
Despite scoring in normal time, Vazquez missed in the shootout. Fortunately for him, Cade Cowell, Gianluca Busio and Jesus Ferreira all converted their penalties. Matt Turner saved the decisive kick from Charles-Andreas Brym to win it for America. B.J. Callaghan’s side will face Panama in the next round.
