The USMNT crashed out of the Gold Cup at the semi-final stage in a defeat to Panama on penalties. It is safe to say by the reaction on Twitter that fans are not happy with the Stars and Stripes’ performance.
Overall it has been a poor tournament for B.J. Callaghan’s side. There were emphatic 6-0 wins over Saint Kitts and Nevis and Trinidad and Tobago. However, they also drew with Jamaica and needed penalties to get past Canada. Their shootout luck ran out in San Diego as Panama prevailed.
The USA started brightly with Cade Cowell hitting the post in the first minute. Although, Panama began to look dangerous and thought they had taken the lead in the 28th minute. Adalberto Carrasquilla finished past Matt Turner but it was ruled out for offside.
Staying onside would be a problem for Panama again in added time at the end of the second half. They believed they had snatched a late winner through Ismael Diaz but again the linesman came to the rescue for the USMNT.
Panama finally scored a goal that counted in extra time when Ivan Anderson flicked the ball past Turner before tapping into an empty net. Jesus Ferreira responded by volleying in the equaliser to send the game to penalties.
Ferreira was the hero in extra time but missed from the spot. In the decisive kick, Cristian Roldan’s effort was saved by Orlando Mosquera. The USMNT were eliminated.
USMNT loses to Panama: Twitter reactions to the defeat
#USMNT's Gold Cup:
— Nico Cantor (@Nicocantor1) July 13, 2023
– Struggled vs Jamaica, snagged a point.
– Lack of clarity vs Canada, drew after 120'
– Unimpressive vs Panamá, eliminated in pens
They were only able to beat an amateur St. Kitts and Nevis and a generationally poor Trinidad & Tobago.
Don’t freak out.

Besides Matt Turner who’s in the top 3 in their positional battle on this team?
They’ve never played together either.
Gregg Berhalter couldn’t be bothered to be here, you shouldn’t let your emotional state be affected by what you’re seeing. #USMNT
That’s about the level of this mediocre USMNT 🇺🇸 roster.

Embarrassing campaign, only won the matches against semi pro Caribbean Islands.
Couldn’t beat Jamaica, Canada or Panama.
Alright…well not what we wanted.

But…
2015, USMNT lost the Gold Cup, USWNT won the World Cup.
2019, USMNT lost the Gold Cup,
USWNT won the World Cup.
2023, USMNT lost the Gold Cup,
USWNT…
So I’m treating this as a good omen
Deserved win for Panama no complaints. They were the better team today. The USMNT thought they could bring in an alternative team and win the whole thing again like in 2021. A team with little quality and it showed today.

My Final 3 thoughts USMNT vs Panama:
— USMNTrev (@Eyesandvibes) July 13, 2023
1) Make no mistake, C team or not we haven’t missed a gold cup final in near 10 years. Not good enough.
2) In a game where everyone looked bad, I’m going back to how impressive sands was.
3) Can we finally retire some of these guys???
USMNT do not deserve to be in the final.

- Poor team performance
- Many individual mistakes
- Arrogance from some
- Disrespect from some
- Lack of quality from a few
Luck takes you only so far… Luck ran out today!
Bring back the A team. 🇺🇸

The USMNT are back in action for friendlies against Uzbekistan and Oman in September. All eyes will be on Gregg Berhalter returning to the dugout for these matches.
