UPDATE at 3:55 p.m CT: The Cardinals hope to resume play at 4:05 p.m. CT.
The Cardinals announced the rain delay at 3:30 p.m. CT with a tweet highlighting “potential inclement weather in the St. Louis area.”
However, there was no immediate information about when the game is expected to restart.
At the time of the delay in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Cardinals enjoyed an 8-3 lead.
The Nationals took an early lead on a Keibert Ruiz home run in the second inning but the fourth inning saw St. Louis’ bats get going. With three runs batted in by Andrew Kinzer, Brendan Donovan and Lars Nootbaar, the Cardinals jumped out to a 3-1 lead and it got better from there.
After Dominic Smith pulled Washington back within a run in the sixth inning, Paul Goldschmidt responded with a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame. Alec Burleson and Nolan Gorman drove in another two runs to make it 8-3.
We’ll have to wait and see if the Cardinals will keep control of the game when it restarts or if the Nationals will turn things around with a late rally like they did on Saturday.
Washington won the first game of the series 7-5. St. Louis came back with a 9-6 win on Saturday night.
