MLB Rumors: Yankees could make the wrong move

As of Wednesday afternoon, the New York Yankees were leaning towards buying at the MLB trade deadline. Much of that can be traced to the looming return of Aaron Judge. Still, the Yankees need another outfielder and some starting pitching help. That’s where Brian Cashman comes in.

Rather than swing big for Cody Bellinger, New York could be better suited to make a marginal upgrade now, and aim for a long-term option come the offseason. Randal Grichuk of the Colorado Rockies makes some sense in that department, and he has been connected to New York, per The Athletic.

"“The team is interested in acquiring someone who could play left field capably and provide some offensive impact, and the Rockies’ Randal Grichuk has been on their radar, the person said, at least somewhat because he’s low-cost. The Blue Jays are paying just about half of the approximately $3 million he’s owed the rest of the season,” Brendan Kuty wrote."

As FanSided’s Kevin Henry wrote a week ago when the Yankees visited Colorado, New York has maintained interest in Grichuk for quite some time. The fit was always there, and Grichuk is affordable, both in terms of assets and finances.

While an injury quelled that interest for a time, the Rockies outfielder has since returned, and the front office should receive plenty of calls about the rental prior to Tuesday.
