This Packers-Rams trade proposal is exactly how Green Bay should replace Malik Willis

The Green Bay Packers and the Los Angeles Rams have a chance to engage in very basic commerce. One team needs something. The other has that something. Making something happen should be easy.

Yes, I'm talking about the quarterback situation. Green Bay needs a backup quarterback, while the Rams have too many backup quarterbacks. There's definitely a deal that can be made here.

The Packers signed Tyrod Taylor to be their backup quarterback back in May. The journeyman quarterback has carved out a long and interesting NFL career, but we also have to face the facts: he turned 37 years old earlier this month. He's basically at the end of his time in the league. The team also has Kyle McCord, an intriguing prospect who could develop into something long-term, but is on his second team in two seasons to open his career.

It makes sense, then, to think about bringing in someone who could theoretically improve your backup quarterback position. And the Packers are in luck, as the Rams have someone they can trade: Stetson Bennett. The team has Matthew Stafford starting for one final season and just spent a first-round pick on Ty Simpson, so Bennett is definitely available.

The bigger question here is probably this: Why would the Packers want Bennett instead of just sticking with McCord? If you want to go the developmental route with the backup role, doesn't McCord have a higher ceiling?

Sure, maybe! But Bennett has more experience and, theoretically, has a higher floor than McCord has, so if the Packers want someone who can do what Malik Willis did in the backup role last season — keep the team afloat if they're forced to play him a few times — then valuing what Bennett brings more than what McCord brings makes sense. While we don't really know what either would do in an NFL start, Bennett has been around a bit longer and has developed behind a future Hall-of-Fame quarterback. McCord spent his first NFL season on a practice squad.

The Rams, meanwhile, have zero incentive to keep Bennett around, even with Stafford's impending retirement. Simpson has proven that he can be the starter on this team, and carrying three quarterbacks into the 2026 season just feels like a waste of a roster spot for a team with Super Bowl aspirations. Sure, having Bennett around in 2027 to be Simpson's backup might be nice, but there will be plenty of chances next offseason to bring in a veteran quarterback who can back up Simpson. Holding on to Bennett just isn't something that the Rams really need to do.
