Ranking the remaining team names for Utah Hockey Club from worst to best
By Austen Bundy
The official name for the Utah Hockey Club is one step closer to being revealed. Fans will be voting over the course of the next four home games at Delta Center between three finalists.
The Utah Hockey Club, which is already in use, the "Mammoth" and the "Wasatch" will appear on electronic ballots but don't be surprised if you don't recognize one of those options. Due to a rejection by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the team was forced to remove "Yeti" as the third option.
We don't have a ballot but we're going to weigh in on these options anyways because it feels like there's one very obvious choice, a solid back-up and one the team just shouldn't even bother with anymore.
Ranking the three possible Utah Hockey Club names from worst to best
3. Utah Wasatch
UPDATE: On Jan. 30, Utah Hockey Club announced they were replacing the Wasatch team name in favor of Outlaws after surveying the fan feedback. Below is the original writing before this news broke.
As much as the team found a clever way to get around the "Yeti" problem, the solution might be even more of an issue. Wasatch is a reference to the famous mountain range in the state and would be an homage to a "mythical snow creature." However, the name may be too hyper-local of a reference in which fans outside of Utah won't have a clue nor will they be interested in learning about it. Losing "Yeti" will be tough to swallow but let's not just settle for less than best at this point.
2. Utah Hockey Club
Fans are already familiar with this one and it doesn't seem to have gone over poorly from an outside observer's point of view. Is it simple, bland? Sure but it's also clean and reminiscent of a team from another sport entirely (Washington Football Team). If something's not broken then why fix it, right? Utah Hockey Club is a solid backup option for those fans that were married to "Yeti" but now won't have that choice anymore and aren't satisfied with the remaining option.
1. Utah Mammoth
By default, Mammoth has become the lone best option for fans to decide from. It's no mythical creature but it would still look pretty nice on jerseys and merchandise. Just think of a big, brown and furry mammoth mascot wandering around the Delta Center taking pictures with kids and getting the crowd all hyped up. Even the governor of Utah, Spencer Cox, may have his own preference on what the team should pick.
That being said, the creature's tusks will have to be shortened to some degree in order to avoid any accidents. Maybe the team can hire Mr. Snuffleupagus away from Sesame Street for home games over the winter months.
