What’s the reasoning behind the Boston Red Sox's yellow and blue Jerseys? The vibrant jerseys drastically differ from the iconic red and navy, synonymous with the club’s moniker. Yet, if fans tuned in to see the traditional gray, clean navy or the fan-favorite red jerseys, Red Sox viewers instead saw the yellow jerseys with blue lettering and white pants. What's going on with that?
These are the team's original City Connect jerseys, meant to connect the baseball team to the city's iconic Boston Marathon is held on the third Monday of April, Patriot’s Day. The holiday is a recognized holiday in Massachusetts. Major League Baseball recognizes this by giving the Red Sox an 11:05 A.M game every year.
The colors were inspired by the marathon’s yellow and blue color theme. But it’s not the lone connection between the Sox jersey, the Boston Marathon, or the city itself.
From the Red Sox pregame notes:
"Unveiled in April 2021, the uniform adopts the blue and yellow colors that honor the spirit of Patriots’ Day weekend, and features ‘Boston’ in a stencil font across the chest paying tribute to the Boylston Street finish line. The numbers ‘617′ are highlighted on the left sleeve as a nod to the area code for Boston and Fenway Park. The numbers appear within a racing bib, honoring one of the city’s most iconic annual sports traditions."
Except that Sunday afternoon wasn’t the third Monday Of April. It was the third Sunday of June. Yet the Red Sox, playing host to the rival New York Yankees, wore them anyway.

The trend continued on Sunday. Sporting the Yellow and Blue, the BoSox defeated the Bombers 6-2, pushing their record while wearing the uniforms to 18-4. They would complete the weekend series sweep in their white jerseys with a 4-1 victory in the nightcap of the doubleheader.
After reaching that 18-4 record at one point in the 2023 season, though, the magic of the yellow City Connect jerseys ultimately wore off for the Red Sox down the stretch. However, they have a chance to create some new mojo now, even if they are still occasionally wearing the yellow jerseys.
Red Sox unveiled new green City Connect jerseys in 2025
In May 2025, the Red Sox introduced their second City Connect jerseys, a green uniform with white pants, white lettering, and a yellow Nike Swoosh and number on the front. The new jerseys' hue is meant to mimic the color of Fenway Park's iconic Green Monster in left field. Meanwhile, the stylized letters and numbers are also designed to honor the 37-foot wall.

Even with the Fenway Greens now in the jersey rotation, though, the Red Sox are still breaking out the original yellow City Connects on occasion, so the age-old question of why they're wearing yellow jerseys will continue.
