Today marked the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby and with it came all the hype and spectacle we’re used to when it comes to this storied race. In addition to the affluent aura that the day basked in, there were a lot of storylines heading into the race that we were all following but there could only be one winner to advance with their pursuit of a Triple Crown.

More from Kentucky Derby

The favorite of the day was California Chrome, a Cal Bred that took horse racing fans by storm not only with his story but with the dominance he had shown up to this point. Another great story surrounded Wicked Strong, a horse named in honor of the Boston Marathon bombing victims and served as a tribute to the harrowing efforts of those first responders and random volunteers that became heroes at the drop of a hat.

And how can we forget Danza, the horse named after actor Tony Danza, who has made a name of his own with a great run up to the Derby. Rosie Napravnik was also a huge story as she sought to become the first female winner in Kentucky Derby history while riding Vicar’s in Trouble.

Ultimately, there could only be one winner and after another thrilling race it was the favored California Chrome who took home first prize and won the Kentucky Derby.

It wasn’t even close either, as after a tight race for most of the way, California Chrome pulled away at the end and won the Derby by a comfortable margin, finishing ahead of Commanding Curve in second and Danza in third.
