Payton is the No. 342 recruit overall regardless of position, the No. 42 ranked receiver and the No. 47 ranked recruit in the state of Florida, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.
He had originally been committed to the Florida Gators but opened up his recruitment in late June and the Trojans, led by Tee Martin were successful in making the Florida native feel at home on the West Coast, which ultimately resulted in today’s commitment.
He joins four-star wide receiver Desean Holmes (Pasadena, Calif. John Muir) and junior college recruit De’Quan Hampton (Long Beach, Calif. Long Beach City College) as receivers in the class as five-star quarterback commit Ricky Town, the No. 2 pro-style in the composite ranks, has a number of attractive targets to throw the ball to when his USC career begins.
Payton had 50 receptions for 857 yards and seven touchdowns last as a junior and added 252 and three touchdowns on the ground on only 13 rushing attempts as he is an electric playmaker when the ball gets in his hands.
With Friday’s commitment from the 6-0, 182-pound receiver, USC has the No. 9 recruiting class in the country and widens their lead as the top class in the Pac-12, according to the 247Sports team rankings.
