USC CB Josh Shaw out indefinitely after being injured rescuing drowning nephew

The USC Trojans will be without starting cornerback Josh Shaw indefinitely after he was injured rescuing his seven-year-old nephew who was drowning, according to the school’s official website.

According to the report on usctrojans.com, Shaw was attending a family function in his hometown of Palmdale at his cousin’s apartment and saw his nephew struggling to swim. Shaw jumped from the second floor apartment after seeing no help nearby to help his nephew and landed on the concrete and spraining both his ankles.

Shaw crawled into the pool and got his nephew out of harm’s way and pulled himself out of the pool with his upper-body.

"“I would do it again for whatever kid it was, it did not have to be my nephew,” Shaw said today.  “My ankles really hurt, but I am lucky to be surrounded by the best trainers and doctors in the world.  I am taking my rehab one day at a time, and I hope to be back on the field as soon as possible.”"

What a courageous act by Shaw who acted out of instinct to help his little nephew who is physically okay, albeit a bit spooked by the whole incident.

From a football standpoint which seems trivial at this point, Shaw was voted as a team captain as one of the team’s best players and most experienced cornerbacks. He had four interceptions and seven pass deflections last year.

“That was a heroic act by Josh, putting his personal safety aside,” head coach Steve Sarkisian said. “But that’s the kind of person he is. It is unfortunate that he’ll be sidelined for a while and we will miss his leadership and play, but I know he’ll be working hard to get back on the field as soon as possible.”

USC will go into their regular season opener without Kenny Bigelow and Jabari Ruffin as the Trojans depth will be tested early.

Shaw will be back at some point, but thankfully he was there for his nephew to prevent a tragedy.
