Ricky Rubio is asking for a max contract that was technically earmarked for him a few years ago but he hasn’t played into. That has sparked trade rumors that Rubio could be on the move if a deal isn’t struck, which is something that Darren Wolfson talked about yesterday.
According to Nate Duncan from Basketball Insiders, a trade between the Wolves and Suns is unlikely and unrealistic.
"That seems very unlikely. Who are they trading for him? Why would Bledsoe go there with Rubio already there? I don’t see a realistic scenario in which that occurs."
This makes sense but it could still happen if the Wolves can’t offer Rubio what he wants. They do not want to pay him the max, but they may have to if someone offers him the max in restricted free agency. If that’s not something the Wolves want to do, then trading him could be an option.
But they’d be trading Rubio for another guy who wants a max contract, which makes little sense since the team has at least seen Rubio in action and would be acquiring a guy who isn’t worth a max offer on the market.
