New Era unveils $100 Derek Jeter cap

You did not read that incorrectly. Yes, 100 dollars. That is how much New Era is asking for its newest creation: a Derek Jeter cap.

The latest in a line of baseball caps commemorating the final season of Yankees legend Derek Jeter, this hat “features an embroidered (raised) New York Yankees team logo on the front of a specially designed crown, stitched New Era® flag at wearer’s left side, stitched Derek Jeter patch at right and embroidered MLB® logo on the rear.

Interior includes branded taping and a moisture absorbing sweatband” according to the official brand website.

New Era is no stranger to high-end prices. Its 59FIFTY series of fitted hats usually sells for $34.99. Personally, I can respect the purchase of a commemorative patch, as the Yankees have been wearing one on their uniforms this season to celebrate Jeter’s legacy.

Purchasing Yankees tickets in increased numbers is also understandable.

A Derek Jeter jersey? Still classy.

However, it is really hard to get behind this one.

This hat is everything that Jeter is not as a player. Unlike this hat, he was never flashy. He never tried to deviate from the Yankee norm. He did not command a ridiculous contract, by today’s standards at least. If nothing else, a fan can pay tribute to Jeter by wearing the fitted cap no. 2 always wears. Nothing beats the classics, and although 35 dollars is a steep amount to pay for a hat, it is certainly more reasonable than 100.

For those who want to see what the fuss is about, the hat is available for purchase at this link.
