Lionel Messi’s La Liga Record 253 Goals In One Place (Video)

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi scored three goals Saturday against Sevilla to set a new La Liga record with 253 career goals. One video has them all.

Lionel Messi has been putting the ball in the net for Barcelona since 2004 and on Saturday, with a hat trick in a 5-1 thumping of Sevilla, no one has done it more often in the history of La Liga, Spain’s premier division.

The three goals for Messi give him 253, pushing him ahead of Telmo Zarra, who had 251 goals for Athletic Bilbao from 1940-55.

Messi tied Zarra’s mark in the 21st minute before getting the record-breaker in the 72nd minute, a sliding, right-footed tap off a cross from Neymar.

Here’s the video, if you have a half-hour or so to watch:

But not everyone is ready to hail Messi’s accomplishment.

Zarra’s daughter, Carmen Zarra, pointed out the Messi didn’t get to 251 nearly as quickly as her father did.

"“Messi scored more goals but did not beat his record,” Carmen Zarra told Spanish radio station Cope, per goal.com. “The record will be beaten when someone scores 251 goals in 267 matches, but Messi needed 280 matches.”"

Telmo Zarra scored his 251 goals for Athletic Bilbao in 268 games. Zarra, who died in February 2006 at the age of 85, also scored 81 goals in 74 Copa del Rey matches.

Of course, that number might not be entirely accurate, either, according to his daughter.

"“We don’t know clear statistics for my father,” she said. “Athletic said that he scored 251 on their website, but other sources said that he scored 253.“Messi will overcome his figures because he is an excellent player but he played 12 matches more than my father. He scored more goals but I think that the media are wrong when they say that he beat my father’s record.”"

I’ll take straw-grasping for $400, Alex.

At only 27, Messi has a chance to extend the record well beyond 253. His closest active rival in La Liga is Cristiano Ronaldo, who has 197 goals for Real Madrid.
