With three sacks already Sunday, Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston has set a new team single-season record and is within two of the NFL mark.

Justin Houston of the Kansas City Chiefs is having himself a day, picking up his third sack against Philip Rivers of the San Diego Chargers in the third quarter to set a new single-season franchise record.

Houston’s sack was his 21st of the season, breaking the mark of 20 set by Hall of Famer Derrick Thomas in 1990.

With 21 sacks, Houston is also within 1½ of tying Michael Strahan’s single-season NFL record of 22½ that he set in 2001 for the New York Giants.

The 21 sacks is tied for the fourth-most all-time with Hall of Famers Chris Doleman of the Minnesota Vikings in 1989 and Reggie White of the Philadelphia Eagles in 1987.

Mark Gastineau had 22 for the New York Jets in 1984 and Jared Allen matched that for the Vikings in 2011, tied for second-most all-time.

Houston is in his fourth season after being selected by Kansas City in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft out of Georgia. He had 10 sacks and earned a Pro Bowl berth in his second season in 2012 and was a Pro Bowler again last season after notching 11 sacks in just 11 games.
