Modified pink accents to uniforms gets HS girls team plucked from playoffs

Unless it directly affects me, my family, my friends or any sports teams or people that I like, I have a strict policy when it comes meting out discipline that rules are rules.  For example:

Me getting a speeding ticket, complete BS.

You getting a speeding ticket, slow down.

This past weekend, a girls HS basketball team in Los Angeles was forced to vacate a win against View Park in the City Tournament after adding pink accents to their basketball uniforms to raise awareness for breast cancer.  To add insult to injury, Harbor City Narbonne was further informed by City Section administrator Dick Dornan that they will not be allowed to compete in the state tournament.

“Breast cancer awareness is in October, and there’s a process for people to request color change. If they’re going to blatantly disregard these rules and regulations, they’re going to affect kids,”said City Section Commissioner John Aguirre after Harbor City Narbonne wore the illegal uniforms in its 57-52 win on Saturday.

Sounds pretty harsh, until you consider that Harbor City Narbonne was already on probation for playing a disqualified player earlier in the season after the player had been given two technicals in the previous contest.  The unsanctioned uniform alterations was the straw that broke the camels back.

“I was under the impression we were able to do it. I didn’t know we had to fill out a waiver,” Narbonne Coach Victoria Sanders said. League rules clearly state school uniforms can only feature the schools official colors. A Hollywood volleyball team was popped and forced to forfeit for the same infraction earlier this year after they added black to their uniforms.

Clearly, Narbonne is not being singled out, but rather the league is being consistent in their ruling. Many on Twitter do not agree.

Is this a case of an innocent infraction or do you think it’s more about a number one seed trying to set themselves apart and thumb their nose at the powers that be?

Either way, breast cancer is an awful disease, one bad enough that it shouldn’t be used as an excuse.
