Cowherd: Big 12 to evaporate, Texas to Pac-12 and Oklahoma to SEC
By Mike Dyce
ESPN radio host Colin Cowherd said the Big 12 will evaporate, leaving Texas and Oklahoma to go their separate ways in college football realignment.
It looked like the days of college realignment was in the past after a tumultuous couple of off seasons. There have been comments from Oklahoma president David Boren about the Big 12 expanding from 10 to 12 teams to represent their namesake.
It would also afford them a conference championship game so a singular champion would be decided to prevent situations like co-champions being left out of the College Football Playoff like last season.
But now it looks like the Big 12 could he heading the opposite direction and once again be in danger of being dissolved. A report from ESPN radio talk show host Colin Cowherd – who doesn’t normally break news – says the Big 12 could evaporate to form four major conferences instead of five.
What makes this all the more curious is that the statement was shared on social media by college football insider and SEC specialist Paul Finebaum, which adds a bit of confidence to what otherwise seems like a talk show host throwing out an idea about what he believes to be true.
In reality that is likely what is happening, Cowherd just sharing his thoughts and beliefs on the subject. it is important to note that Cowherd’s comments make it sound like the other Big Four conferences are ready for the Big 12 to give up and dissolve, not the conference themselves.
It makes a lot of sense for the college football landscape for the Big 12 to dissolve. With five power conferences fighting for four playoff spots it would make things more seamless and simple, but could rob the sport of the drama and controversy come postseason time, a time-honored tradition for college football fans. There will always be the independent team debate though.
The Big 12 would struggle to find teams worth their while to expand and are basically on a lifeline anyways. Would college football really want to separate Texas and Oklahoma? The Longhorns have already lost a rival in the Texas A&M Aggies to realignment, would they want to lose another in OU, probably not. Wouldn’t the SEC with Oklahoma and A&M and old rivals like Arkansas be more appealing for Texas?
Needless to say this is all fun to think about and isn’t probably something that is seriously going to happen anytime soon.
