Since football was invented nearly 146 years ago, there have been many incredible feats, including 25 college football records that will never be broken.

Baseball has always been known as America’s Pastime, though it’s hard to argue that football has become the nation’s most popular sport. Since the game was brought to life for the first time on college campuses, many feel that college football is the purest form of the sport.

More from College Football

Many strange and wonderful things have happened in college football games since Rutgers and Princeton met on a New Jersey field with 25 players to a side, playing a game that looked more like rugby and soccer than what we know and love today. Once firm rules were established in the decades that followed (with great thanks to the Walter Camp, the Father of American Football) and record-keeping improved in the 20th Century, we gained the ability to look back at many of those records with wonder.

Because of the dimensions of the field that won’t allow anything longer, there have been 99-yard passes and 99-yard runs, 100-yard interceptions returned for touchdowns, a 99-yard fumble recovery return when an offensive player dropped the ball prior to scoring a touchdown, and a 100-yard missed field goal with one second left on the clock. Those are records that will never be broken, but all are likely to be repeated at some point on a long enough timeline.

There were even some records believed to be unbreakable that fell last season. Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon III set a new single-game rushing record with 408 yards, only to see Oklahoma’s Samaje Perine pass it the very next week. And, one season after he attempted an NCAA-record with 89 pass attempts in a single game, Washington State quarterback Connor Halliday set a new single-game mark with 734 passing yards, breaking David Klingler’s 24-year old record.

However, despite the recent re-writing of the NCAA record books, there are at least 25 college football records that, in all likelihood, will never be broken.
