There is injury news, there is news about games, and then there is the important stuff. On Wednesday morning, the biggest news of the National Football League season broke when Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan spoke out and declared that hot dogs are not a sandwich.

This is the kind of take that can divide a city, even a country. There are some monsters out there who believe that somehow, a hot dog is a sandwich. Let me ask those people a key question … what other sandwich involves a tiny bun? There’s the hoagie roll and the sub, but a roll that can barely contain a hot dog? That’s only a sandwich for a baby or the softest people out there.

It’s like saying a corn dog is a sandwich? Is that a sandwich on a stick? What’s next? Men wanting to marry goats? This is an outrage of the highest order!

Athletes get a ton of flack for not standing up on the important issues in this country. Good on Ryan for bypassing the nonsense like the national debt and global warming, and going straight to the burgeoning hot dog controversy. This needed to be addressed and Ryan was willing to stick his neck out and make sure the topic was covered by a man of the people.

At some point, other NFL players will need to come out in defense of Ryan. The quarterback needs to know he has the support of his peers. In fact, when the Falcons play the San Francisco 49ers this weekend, the team should have a shoulder patch with a hot dog between two pieces of right bread, featuring a red line through it.

Make a statement, Atlanta. Your quarterback did.
