Alex Rodriguez has been a lightning rod for criticism throughout his career. Much of it has been deserved, due to performance-enhancing drug rumors that were eventually confirmed and an inflated ego that he has regularly put on display.

The one thing Rodriguez could always hang his hat on was his production on the field. His resume includes 696 career home runs, a career batting average of .295, three MVP Awards, 14 All-Star selections, 10 Silver Slugger awards and three Gold Gloves. Once he retires, Hall of Fame voters will have to weigh Rodriguez’s talent and elite-level production against his proven PED use that included a season-long ban in 2014.

The New York Yankees have clearly started looking toward the future, and Rodriguez has already seen his role diminished to essentially a platoon designated hitter now. On Monday, after the Yankees made a couple noteworthy trades in the days before the deadline, the New York Daily News reported the team could release Rodriguez before the end of the season.

It would be a hard move to make, for a number of reasons, but here are five reasons the Yankees should release “A-Rod” before the 2016 season comes to an end.
