With the 2016 season fast approaching, the Air Force academy has unveiled some cool new football helmets.

Air Force football has had a nice run over Troy Calhoun’s nine seasons as head coach, with 67 wins, eight bowl appearances (three wins) and at least eight wins six times.

The Falcons ended the 2015 season on a three-game losing streak, including a 55-36 loss to California and 2016 NFL No. 1 pick Jared Goff in the Armed Forces Bowl. But 13 returning starters from last year, including nine from a defense that was top-50 nationally in multiple notable categories, bring high hopes for 2016.

Air Force traditionally has a simple, distinctive design on the side of their helmets, even for their alternate uniforms, and that’s cool in itself. But they’ve upped the ante a bit, with an unveiling of cool new headgear for a game during the coming season.

Here’s a nice still shot of the helmets, from ESPN’s Brett McMurphy.

As the official tweet suggests, the Falcons will take the field in the AIRPOWER Legacy Series Sharktooth helmets for their Sept. 10 home game against Georgia State. Using the helmets regularly would take away some of the novelty, but let’s hope the Air Force Academy brings them out again at some point in the future.
