Verne Lundquist got hit in the face just before covering the second round matchup of the NCAA Tournament between West Virginia and Notre Dame.

Everyone loves Verne Lundquist. The broadcaster is a rarity, equally adept at broadcasting football games and basketball games. His voice is heavenly to many and he’s great at making the most exciting moments extremely exciting. Uncle Verne got a bit of a scare before calling the second round matchup of the NCAA Tournament between the West Virginia Mountaineers and Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He got hit in the face before the game, but luckily he wasn’t hurt.

Lundquist didn’t even see the ball coming. The player in question showed immediate remorse, seeing if Uncle Verne was OK. That’s the proper response to hitting the legendary broadcaster by accident. He shows some respect to Lundquist, shaking his hand.

Uncle Verne recently called his last NCAA football game. The legendary Army-Navy rivalry back in December 2016 was his last football game. Who knows how much longer Lundquist will stick around calling college basketball games? However, hopefully he’ll keep calling games as long as possible. Lundquist is one of the most beloved broadcasters in recent history.

West Virginia enters the game as the fourth seed. They experienced a scare in the first round, nearly getting upset by Bucknell. However, the Mountaineers advanced with an 86-80 win. Meanwhile, Notre Dame survived a first round scare as well as the fifth seed. 12th seed Princeton nearly beat them, but the Fighting Irish got the two point win 60-58. At halftime, the Mountaineers lead 42-35. Notre Dame will attempt a comeback. If they do, Lundquist will surely have a great reaction.
