Fantasy Baseball Starting Pitchers to Pickup for August 8 Starts

Major League Baseball should have games going for about 13 hours straight on Wednesday from the Twins and Indians starting in Cleveland at 12:05 PM ET until the Rockies and Dodgers finish up their 10:10 PM ET start in Los Angeles. That’s great news for fantasy baseball owners who can have players playing all day long.

If you’re looking to boost your starting pitchers for this marathon Wednesday, here’s four options that can help you out:

Pickups for August 8

Jose Quintana – Chw: (20.3%) Quintana had been rolling along fine until the Twins roughed him up a bit in back to back starts. He’ll face the Royals at home as he goes for his fifth win of the season. He has a 2.80 ERA in his 14 games this season while going 4-1 with a 1.10 WHIP. He’s been slightly better at home with a 2.31 ERA in five starts. The Royals were able to get to him for five runs in a start in Kansas City earlier this year in which Quintana received a no-decision. This time around, run support should be no problem as the White Sox lineup faces Jeremy Guthrie who is 0-3 with a 7.71 ERA since joining the Royals from Colorado. The White Sox have moved Philip Humber to the bullpen so Quintana should be pitching every fifth day the rest of the season.

Chris Young – NYM: (0.9%) Young is coming off his best start of the year when he limited the Giants to a run on four hits over seven innings to get his third win on the season. Through 11 games started he has a 1.28 WHIP and a 4.22 ERA. He’ll face the Marlins at Citi Field where he has a 3.33 ERA through four starts. He’ll face Nate Eovaldi from Miami with a 2-7 record and a 4.66 ERA. Young should be able to bring home a W with a quality start which he’s had in seven of his 11 starts.

Clayton Richard – SD: (5.3%) At Petco, Clayton Richard is 5-4 with a 3.46 ERA. He’ll face the Cubs punchless offense Wednesday. Richard has historically done better towards the end of the year with a 7-2 record in the past three years and a 4.31 ERA in 12 August starts. He sets up nicely to get off to to a good start to the month again after shutting down the Mets his last time out (one run in 7.0 innings). Richard may not get the W if the Padres can’t get to the Cubs Jeff Samardzija, but he should be good for some solid ERA/WHIP numbers.

Alex Cobb – TB:  (0.8%) Cobb’s performance all year has been inconsistent but he’s been solid his last few times out. Last start was probably his best of the year limiting the then-red-hot A’s to a run and four hits over seven innings to pick up his fifth win. On the season, Cobb has made 13 starts and has a solid 1.35 WHIP although his 4.60 ERA is high. In his last five starts he hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs although two of those starts were cut short due to wildness and a high pitch count. He’ll face the Blue Jays and Henderson Alvarez in Tampa at 7:10 in the middle game of their three-game set.
