Denver Nuggets general manager Masai Ujiri, who made the Nuggets a playoff contending team with no superstars, will leave the Denver Nuggets to become the general manager of the Toronto Raptors.

The 2013 NBA executive of the year, Ujiri had ties with the Raptors organization and in fact worked with the Raptors before. Former general manager and president of basketball operations, Bryan Colangelo, hired Ujiri as the director of global scouting. Ujiri become the assistant general manager in 2008 under Colangelo and later went to Denver in 2010.

Ujiri may be able to live up to expectations. The Raptors have good pieces with Rudy Gay, Jonas Valancuinas and DeMar DeRozan but there’s still questions to be answered about the style and fit.

It’s crunch time for Ujiri as he’ll have to decide some difficult financial decisions. The Raptors are in line to enter the luxury tax next season if all the players stay on the roster.

The Denver Nuggets will start their search for a new GM immediately.
