Linebacker Shawne Merriman retired in March but now he wants back in the NFL. Specifically he wants to play the hybrid role for the Atlanta Falcons and tag team with Osi Umenyiora to go after quarterbacks in the NFC.

But that could just be a problem for the locker room, an area where head coach Mike Smith says you need to win first. The Falcons probably won’t be reaching out to Merriman to play keeping the lights off on his career.

His career statistics dropped off after being busted for PED use.

But it’s a interesting notion and he is putting his money where his mouth is. If that were actually worked into the contract, double digit sacks or the money goes to charity, it’d be interesting, I’d follow it closely. It certainly expresses confidence.
