When the San Francisco 49ers acquired wide receiver Jon Baldwin from the Kansas City Chiefs earlier this season in exchange for A.J. Jenkins, they probably weren’t thinking they’d have to thrust him into the starting lineup.

How things change.

While Baldwin hasn’t been officially deemed a starter, after rookie Quinton Patton broke his foot in the Niners’ Thursday night win over the St. Louis Rams, Baldwin will be forced into more action according to head coach Jim Harbaugh:

"“There’ll be more action for him,” Harbaugh said Friday, according to remarks distributed by the club."

The 49ers are already missing starting wide receiver Michael Crabtree and Mario Manningham, though Manningham is expected to return after Week Six which should provide some relief. Still, it’s a pretty desperate situation in the Niners’ wide receiver corps, so they’re hoping Baldwin, who fell out of favor in Kansas City can emerge alongside Anquan Boldin.

It’s a long shot, but it might be the only shot the 49ers have – at least until Manningham returns from injury.
