The Detroit Lions have been linked to a handful of names regarding their head coaching vacancy since firing Jim Schwartz a few days ago, but one name that refuses to go away is that of Ken Whisenhunt.

Whisenhunt, who previously was the Arizona Cardinals head coach is currently the San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator but that hasn’t stopped the Lions from doing research on Whizz, who they apparently have ‘very strong’ interest in:

"#Lions have been calling around, checking references on #Chargers OC Ken Whisenhunt. Their interest in him is very strong."

With San Diego currently in the playoffs, the Lions wouldn’t be granted an interview request at this point, so they’ll need to wait until the Chargers season concludes – whenever that might be.

He’s certainly a much better candidate than other names (Tom Cable) we’ve seen thrown around, especially with so many potent offensive weapons in Motown.

Barring a hiring in the relatively near future, it wouldn’t be a shock to see the Lions extend an invite to Whisenhunt once the Chargers season comes to an end.
