Would they or wouldn’t they? Depending on who you asked or when you asked, you received a different answer.

However – it seems we have something definitive on Jairus Byrd of the Buffalo Bills.

According to Joe Buscaglia, the Bills will not use the franchise tag on their All-Pro safety.

"According to league sources, the #Bills will not be using the franchise tag on Jairus Byrd today."

It’s a pretty big noise maker considering Byrd will all but hit the open market and will likely become the highest paid safety in NFL history.

It’s very possible the Bills and Byrd will attempt to work out a deal, but, you have to think Byrd will be looking to see what type of offers he’ll receive on the open market.

Multiple teams will be interested in the talent – a list that could potentially include the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The lack of a franchise tag will only increase the market for other secondary players not tagged, like San Francisco 49ers safety Donte Whitner.
