Atlanta Falcons beat reporter D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that the Falcons have re-signed defensive tackle Peria Jerry.

Terms or length of the contract were not in Ledbetter’s report.

This is probably one of the most puzzling signings by Atlanta this offseason, as many fans were sure (and quite happy) that Jerry and the Falcons had seen their last days together.

Jerry, who some have considered to be a bust, started his career with the Falcons as a first round draft pick in 2009, but had a severe knee injury in just his second game as a pro, and has never looked like the same player the Falcons were hoping to get since then.

While its true that the Atlanta defensive line is in need of some depth, many will balk at the “same players, same results” scenario that has haunted the Falcons in recent seasons – which have been successful (sans 2013) but leaving work to be done.

Jerry has had an up-and-down career with the Falcons, with some pockets of good play, but for the most part a lot of inconsistency and injuries. If Atlanta was looking to improve on the defensive line, re-signing Perry didn’t go a long way to getting them there.
