Flame, Mozilla’s Firefox OS device for developers

With the technology industry becoming more competitive by the day, it only makes sense that more companies would be looking to get in on the action.  That is exactly what software giant Mozilla is targeting with their new offering, Flame.  The $170 developer designed device has gone live for pre-order today.

Flame projects in the low to mid level range on the smartphone latter, and with its price point, that makes a lot of sense.  Although not designed as a smartphone, the Flame will be made for developers and with developers in mind.  With developers being the target audience for the Flame, the device will ship with the latest bugs-and-all Nightly build of Firefox OS.

The Flame is representative of the mid-tier phone hardware Mozilla and its partners are targeting over the coming year.

Although the device is currently being designed for developers only, Mozilla Chief Technology Officer, Asa Dotzler, wants consumers to keep in mind the grand plan is much greater.

“The Flame is representative of the mid-tier phone hardware Mozilla and its partners are targeting over the coming year,” Dotzler mentioned in a blog post. “It was designed for our developer and contributor community, so we worked with the manufacturer T2Mobile to keep the price as low as possible.

“We’re excited that we are able to bring a high-quality reference device to our developer community at an affordable price.”

More from Technology

While the Flame isn’t usable at this point by the standard consumer, the market can expect to see something similar in the coming months.  With the Motorola E having just been released, the lower cost smartphone is something of a target at this point.

Mozilla is looking to continue its reach from not only developer tablets and smartphones, but to get usable product into consumers hands as well.
