Samsung debuts the Simband

The wearables category seems to have new entrants by the day, and the tech companies don’t appear to be slowing any time soon.  Wednesday, Samsung introduced what hopes will be the best wearable on the market, the Simband.

Samsung seems to be going for a more hardcore fitness approach than that of much of its competition.  The Simband will utilize different wavelengths directed at the wearers skin to track the wearers health continuously.  Multiple different levels will be tracking, such as blood pressure, respiration, heart rate, hydration level, and the amount of carbon dioxide in your bloodstream.

We believe that once we’re working from a common platform, sensors will become more accurate, and will be brought to market more quickly.

The device was debuted at Samsung’s “Voice of the Body” event in San Francisco.  During the debut, the Simband showed heartbeat information in a style similar to that of a traditional ECG reading like a seismograph wave.  Samsung designed the Simband with a “shuttle” battery that will allow the wearer to don the device 24 hours a day and charge it while sleeping.

Simband is being developed around a software platform called SAMI (Samsung Architecture Multimodal Interactions).  Samsung is hoping to roll out the platform to developers and have even non-Samsung devices use the technology in hopes to create consistent information.

Ram Fish, the President of Digital Health for Samsung Electronics said, “We believe that once we’re working from a common platform, sensors will become more accurate, and will be brought to market more quickly.”

While no pricing information or release date has been given, the prospect of the execution surrounding the Simband is quite intriguing.  Hopefully Samsung can deliver on the next great wearable health device.
