The Minnesota Timbewolves couldn’t ind a head coach on the planet who wanted to coach their team, so team president Flip Saunders had to step up an fill the role himself.

More from Minnesota Timberwolves

It has ended up being a move that has polarized all six Wolves fans that still care about the team after it has been destroyed from within thanks to shoddy leadership for the past ten years. Glenn Taylor has blown this franchise up in the worst way possible and things are so bad that Flip Saunders had to hire himself to be head coach because he literally couldn’t give the job away.

As Saunders told Sid Hartman of the Star Tribune, he was never his own first choice to become the Wolves head coach this upcoming season. Instead, Jeff Van Gundy as his No. 1 choice and it was only after he turned down the gig that Saunders realized he may have to be the one who steps in to right the ship as well as he could.

"“The first guy that I went to and tried to get was Jeff Van Gundy. He was the first guy,” Saunders said Thursday, when word came out that he would coach the Wolves next season. “… He’s a guy that Glen and I were comfortable [with] and would have hired him off the bat. I feel like he’s the best coach, the best coach out there and has a lot of the same philosophies.“As Jeff said to me, I talked to him this morning, and he said, ‘Whenever I go somewhere I want to feel that I’m the right guy for that job.’ He said, ‘The reason I didn’t go to Minnesota was because I felt you were the right guy for the job, not me, and I was uncomfortable.’ ”"

Minnesota is a basketball boneyard as it’s completely devoid of anyone who remotely knows anything about hte game and the team has consistently been one of the worst teams in the league. It’s no surprise that Kevin Love wants out and it’s even less of a surprise that no one with a right state of mind would want the crappy head coaching job the team was offering up.

There’s always time for change, but the Wolves have been around for a while now and still haven’t figured out that you need to win basketball games, otherwise no one will want to coach or play for you.
