Hawk was clearly thrilled to not only win the gold medal in the event, but in front of his hometown crowd.

“It meant the most to me,” Hawk told FanSided when talking about winning the gold medal in his home town. “I had all my local friends and family here, so the support was outstanding. It was pretty crazy.”

Heading into his final run as the last rider in the event, Hawk already knew he had won the gold medal and was able to take a victory lap of sorts. Despite having the two highest scores in the finals, the pack was close behind him and he could’ve been put in a position where he needed big third and final run to seal the gold. Had he been put in that position Hawk said he had a back up plan.

“You always try to put up your highest score on your first run but by no means does it mean that it is safe. I was fully ready. I definitely was sitting on a couple of things that I was going to pull out if I had to pull out a higher score,” Hawk said. “Going into my last run I knew that I was going to stay in first so I only wanted to take a little bit and show how excited I was. It is an amazing experience.”

Hawk was quick to praise the Austin crowd and the Circuit of the Americas as a venue as well.

“I can’t see a better city than Austin to showcase an event like this.”
