As we speak, the Atlanta Braves sit just a half-game behind the Washington Nationals who are currently atop National League East, so it’s safe to say they’re in position to make a postseason run assuming things keep going their way during the next month.

More from Atlanta Braves

Of course, payroll concerns are an issue and despite the need for an additional big arm, David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution does not believe that the Braves will be interested in either David Price or Jeff Samardzija if/went they are put on the trade block (assuming they’re not already there).

“Because the Atlanta Braves are over budget and still have a solid rotation with Julio Teheran, Mike Minor, Ervin Santana, Aaron Harang and Wood, they aren’t expected to get into a high-stakes bidding war for the likes of Tampa Bay’s David Price or the Cubs’ Jeff Samardzija before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.”

To make matters worse, both Price and Samardzija still have a year remaining on their contracts so their asking price, despite a somewhat saturated market, will be even more expensive than normal.

Given that, it’s understandable that the Braves would likely look to improve their team elsewhere, though I have a feeling they may be having a bit of buyers remorse on Ervin Santana who hasn’t looked all that good recently. Making it worse is that the Atlanta Braves could have absorbed the contract of Price or Samardzija if not for Santana’s hefty one-year deal, but for now it doesn’t appear as if the Braves are going to put themselves in position for a big name pitcher trade.
