NCAAM: LaVine, 5 players who could have used another year
By Bryce Olin
Noah Vonleh: Power Forward, Indiana Draftposition: 9th pick, Charlotte Hornets
Charlotte may have got the steal of the draft, or they may have gotten the biggest bust of the lottery. Who knows at this point? People were really high on Vonleh all year at Indiana, but when I saw him play, I wasn’t all that impressed. Yes, he is a very good athlete and I can see the Chris Bosh comparison. I also noticed a guy who didn’t really have that good of a feel for the game. It was either that, or Hoosiers’ coach Tom Creen had no idea what to do with Vonleh. If he is as good as people say, I can’t imagine why Creen wouldn’t have fed him in the elbow or post area 10 to 15 times per game.
You may have noticed a common theme among the power forwards who need another year in college. They all have never been the guy in college. Vonleh is the same way. He looks like he has the physical tools to be a solid player in the NBA, and I actually really like the pick for Charlotte… BUT, it’s incredibly difficult the fact that he only averaged 25 minutes per game in college on a bad Indiana team.
Vonleh isn’t as good as he is going to be, not by a long shot. I just hope we don’t look back at this draft in five years and wonder if Vonleh would have stayed in school, would things have played out differently. It surely won’t be the last time when raise that question about somebody.
