Over the course of his illustrious career, Minnesota Twins’ legend Bert Blyleven struck out 3,701 batters. Many of those strikeouts were of the swinging variety as he victimized countless hitters with a curveball that still ranks among the best anybody has ever seen.

More from Minnesota Twins

Blyleven took time on Monday to bring his legendary curveball out of retirement for a good cause. With the All-Star Game in Minneapolis, Blyleven teamed up with 2 GINGERS® Irish Whiskey to pitch for a good cause.

Batters were given the opportunity to face Blyleven in a Wiffle® ball showdown. Each batter who struck out took a pie in the face, and with each pie thrown 2 GINGERS® donated money to the the Wounded Warrior Project and the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association. All curveballs and pies thrown, this project resulted in a combined total of $10,000 donated.

Blyleven’s curveball used to look like a Wiffle® balll to hitters. It is wholly unsurprising, then, that Blyleven registered a lot of strikeouts while throwing an actual Wiffle® ball. It is probably safe to assume that these hitters were much happier to strike out than any of his big league opponents, however, because it was all for such a great cause.

One can rarely go wrong when it comes to either of these activities: Wiffle® ball or throwing pies at people. Combined together, these two made for an outstanding event. Throw in the fact that it was all for a good cause and you have got an excellent event as a part of All-Star week in Minneapolis.
