Ray Rice got a slap on the wrist today from the NFL, as he was suspended for two games stemming from an incident earlier this year in which he was caught on camera dragging his then-fiancee unconscious out of a casino elevator after knocking her out.

Rice apologized for his despicable actions, but knew that the consequences for his domestic abuse would be severe. Ultimately, however, the NFL decided to be lenient with Rice and gave him a suspension for less games than they would for a player that smokes marijuana.

Rice released a statement from the Ravens earlier today, and his response is truly shocking (Courtesy of USA Today):

"It is disappointing that I will not be with my teammates for the first two games of the season, but that’s my fault. As I said earlier, I failed in many ways. But, Janay and I have learned from this. We have become better as a couple and as parents. I am better because of everything we have experienced since that night. The counseling has helped tremendously."

Did Rice really just say Janay “learned from this?” Does he not realize that he attacked her, and yet the NFL basically did nothing to reprimand him?

Rice’s actions and response to the suspension further corroborate the fact that the NFL did not do it’s job in punishing the former Pro Bowler. When domestic violence is given a shorter suspension than a player taking adderall, there is a major flaw in the system.

Janay was a victim, not a perpetrator, and Rice saying that she “learned from this” is despicable and cowardly.
