Michigan should have a deep stable of talented running backs with a slimmed-down Derrick Green, Drake Johnson and De’Veon Smith fighting for carries in the Wolverines backfield, but this talented trio could be a quartet depending on the status of USC transfer, Ty Isaac.

The former Trojan and four-star recruit from Illinois transferred to Michigan in early June, but Michigan is still in the dark as they await the ruling from the NCAA about his medical hardship waiver.
Isaac wanted to transfer closer to his ailing mother who is dealing with complications following hearing loss surgery and is unable to fly to see her son play. The 100-mile rule allows for transfer students to be closer to home and eligible to play immediately if the new school is within 100 miles of their home.
Ann Arbor is roughly 250 miles away from the family home in Shorewood, Illinois and may have a hard time getting Isaac eligible to play in 2015. If the NCAA does not grant him eligibility this year, he will have to sit out until 2015 and will then have three years remaining.
With Isaac’s status up in the air, Michigan head coach Brady Hoke is just happy to have the 6-3, 225-pound running back in camp and competing with the rest of the backs.
“We’re glad Ty’s here and he’s been going through it,” Hoke tells Mlive.com. “We still have no idea on when that hardship will get decided upon. But we’re glad he’s here.”
The former four-star recruit in the 2013 class according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings rushed 236 yards on 40 carries as a true freshman in 2013. He was the No. 8 all-purpose running back and No. 54 player overall.
