Now that Josh Gordon will officially be taking the next 12 months off from NFL action, the Browns must turn to their current stable of offensive weapons in the hopes of finding a spark for starting quarterback Brian Hoyer. The first name on that list — one well ahead of the rest — would be tight end Jordan Cameron, who enjoyed a breakout 2013 campaign.

More from Cleveland Browns

The Chronicle-Telegram reports that Jordan Cameron ‘will be forced into a much larger role‘ thanks to stud receiver Josh Gordon’s suspension, which should come as a surprise to exactly no one. Cameron tallied 80 catches for 917 yards and 7 touchdowns in 2013, which dwarfed his numbers from the previous two seasons in the NFL combined.

We’ll soon learn just how much of Cameron’s success was a result of his own play and how much came from having Gordon to attract attention from opposing defenses. Given his size and skill though, it’s still safe to say that Cameron is the team’s best weapon and a safe bet for some big numbers.

It could also come down to who plays quarterback for a majority of 2014. Hoyer and Cameron had a brief spark together before Hoyer went down with a season-ending knee injury. In Weeks 3 and 4 alone, the two combined for 16 completions, 157 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Rookie Johnny Manziel on the other hand is an unknown to this point. It’s fair to say with his scrambling style though that Manziel would happily lean on Cameron if given the opportunity to play.

Regardless of who lines up under center for most of the season, the Browns quarterback will know where to look first and foremost. Jordan Cameron should be primed for a big season barring injury, even if the rest of the team is predicted to have another tough year.
