Derek Carr to face 'very aggressive' New York Jets defense

For much of the preseason and training camp the Oakland Raiders were adamant Matt Schaub would be their starting quarterback come Week 1.

Of course, Schaub’s struggles continued and rookie Derek Carr, while by no stretch perfect, looked damn good. That eventually forced the hand of the Oakland Raiders coaching staff, promoting Carr to the top of the depth chart where he’ll take on a ‘very aggressive’ defense from the New York Jets.

That’s the word from ESPN’s Rich Cimini who believes the aggressive play calling may be due to the Jets’ new faces, not completely in effort to rattle Derek Carr.

"Facing a rookie quarterback, Derek Carr, Ryan will call a very aggressive game, I believe, leaving the corners in man-to-man against the Oakland Raiders’ pedestrian wide receivers. With all the new faces in the secondary, I think he needs to keep it simple, which should help with communication."

While the Jets will understandably attempt to make life difficult for Carr, Cimini suggests Rex Ryan wants to keep everything simple for New York’s defensive backs by keeping them out of a zone scheme. Such a suggestion hints that Ryan and the Jets don’t have a lot of respect for Oakland’s wide receivers and feel they can get enough pressure on Carr without support from the secondary.

If that proves to be the case, Derek Carr might be best served getting out of the pocket and attempting to pick apart the single coverage.

The additional weight in the box could also make the running game struggle so it appears as if Derek Carr will need to have a good game with his arm on a hostile field.
