NFL could re-open the Ray Rice case and they should

The NFL dropped the ball when they initially suspended Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice for knocking his then-fiancee unconscious. On Monday morning, further video surfaced that showed Rice brutally knocking Janay Palmer out in an Atlantic Casino elevator and the NFL has an opportunity to right their wrong.

More from Baltimore Ravens

The league office released a statement claiming they had never seen the video.

“We requested from law enforcement any and all information about the incident, including the video from inside the elevator. That video was not made available to us and no one in our office has seen it until today,” the statement read.

Now that they have, it is only right to re-open the case — which is something that multiple media outlets have said they have the power to do.

If the NFL is being honest, they did not have a crucial piece of evidence in the case that would have given them further insight on what appropriate punishment would be.

Everyone who has seen the video knows what the right move would be. Suspend Ray Rice indefinitely.

Hell, throw him out of the league.

There is no place for that of behavior anywhere in this world. This is above sports. It is more about than just scoring touchdowns and making money. It is about doing what is right.

If NFL commissioner Roger Goodell does not re-open the case and bring down the hammer, he has failed to do his job and he should be ousted.

Baltimore could also take action.

The Ravens would have to pay a pretty penny to outright release Ray Rice, but they should also give the move honest consideration.

Then there are the fans who have previously given Ray Rice a standing ovation. If he is still a member of the team in Week 3 when he is eligible to return, let’s hope that those in the stands will greet Ray Rice with a loud chorus of boos to show that his actions will never be tolerated no matter what he can do on the playing field. But hopefully we will not get to that point, and the NFL will give Rice the lengthy suspension that he deserves.

He is lucky he is not in jail.
