The good news seems to keep on coming for the Buffalo Bills these days. First the team goes in to Chicago and beats the Bears 23-20 in overtime, then the team appears on the verge of having new local owners and now there’s apparently movement in talks with one of the teams’ best players.

According to ProFootballTalk.com, Bills general manager Doug Whaley spoke to radio station WGR on Tuesday morning and in that discussion was the contract status of running back C.J. Spiller.
Whaley was quoted by the Bills’ official Twitter account as saying this:

It will be interesting to see how this situation plays out, because under head coach Doug Marrone, Spiller has become more of a runner between the tackles. Additionally, the Bills continue to use Fred Jackson in key situations and just added two other running backs to the fold this past offseason.
With Spiller eligible to become a free agent at season’s end, it would be wise for the Bills to lock him up early in the season. For Spiller it may be more wise to wait it out and see how his role unfolds for the team as the season goes along.
Spiller was a highly touted prospect out of Clemson and was the Bills’ first-round pick in the 2009 NFL draft, the No. 9 overall pick to be exact.
However, it could be said his tenure in Buffalo has been a bit of a disappointment since he was a top 10 pick. In his four full years in Buffalo, Spiller has gone over the 1,000-yard mark just once and has just 3,015 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Last week, Spiller went for 53 yards on 15 carries with a touchdown reception in the win over the Bears.
Those numbers don’t necessarily suggest a player worthy of a long-term extension, but it is early in the 2014 season and these talks could be a catalyst for improved performances in the coming weeks.
