If you’ve been following Philadelphia 76ers rookie Joel Embiid on social media, you’ve probably had more than a few laughs.

However, the fine line between being comedic and insensitive was crossed this afternoon after Embiid made a relatively played out joke regarding Ray Rice’s domestic violence scandal.
Embiid, who has routinely courted pop singer Rihanna and asked for a higher rating on NBA 2K on Twitter, posted the following message which understandably did not sit well with many of his followers.

It’s likely Embiid wasn’t only trying to make light of the unfortunate incident between Ray Rice and his wife (then fiance) but also the incident that occurred between Jay Z and sister-in-law Solange. As you may recall, Solange attacked Jay in an elevator while his wife Beyonce watched without offering up any help.
Still, while Joel Embiid likely didn’t mean anything by his tweet, he has to know better and its a situation like this that will force the Philadelphia 76ers to monitor his account even more strictly.
For what it’s worth, the 76ers previously stated they were okay with Embiid’s unique sense of humor (Philadelphia’s GM even said he’d like Embiid to take over his account) though this may change things.
The tweet didn’t last long as Joel Embiid, dealing with significant backlash, quickly removed the tweet though suggested that people not be so sensitive.
Fox News used the same rather stale joke when they were discussing Ray Rice on a television program Monday afternoon and also faced opposition for the decision.
