In a somewhat surprising move at the end of the preseason, the Denver Broncos released defensive lineman Kevin Vickerson. After a disappointing week 1 and with needs created by injuries, the Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly signed Vickerson to come play for them in Denver’s same division.

Pro Football Talk reported the signing.

Prior to the Chiefs swooping in and signing Vickerson, the Cincinnati Bengals had expressed interest in his signing him to bolster their defensive front. Before his 2013 season was cut short by a hip injury, Vickerson played very well for the Broncos. In 11 games he had 22 tackles and one sack and was one of the best players on Denver’s defense for spurts.

For whatever it is worth, the Chiefs are all set to take on the Broncos this Sunday in an early divisional game. With less than a week to get acclimated, Vickerson may or may not see meaningful time in that game.

Over the course of the season, however, Vickerson could be a solid addition for the Chiefs if he can stay healthy. He joins a Chiefs’ defense that has a lot of work to do after a blowout loss to the Tennessee Titans in week 1 as they try to prove that their success in 2013 was not a fluke.
