Dimitri Patterson gave up on the Jets this preseason by going AWOL, but the NFL hasn’t entirely given up on Dimitri Patterson.

More from Detroit Lions

With the Detroit Lions badly needing another cornerback in the wake of nickel man Bill Bentley’s ACL injury, the team is reportedly giving Patterson a work out.

Patterson played two years for the Dolphins before signing on this season with the Jets. Before Miami he had stints with the Redskins, Vikings, Chiefs, Eagles and Browns.

The journeyman managed to start four games for Miami in 2013, and was in the mix for a roster spot with the Jets. Until he decided to vanish right before the Jets’ preseason game against the Giants, that is.

Patterson remained in hiding from the Jets for an entire weekend before finally getting in touch with GM Jon Idzik. It didn’t take long for the Jets to suspend and finally cut Patterson, who denied throughout the entire process that he had actually gone AWOL.

I guess Patterson just doesn’t know what the term “AWOL” means, because by any definition, he went AWOL. Period.

I don’t think anyone still knows for sure why Patterson decided to bail on the Jets, but the Lions don’t really care right now, they just need a cornerback.

Patterson is probably still good enough to warrant a spot as a No. 4 corner on an NFL roster. Provided you can convince him to actually show up.
