The Georgia Bulldogs will be without reserve running back Nick Chubb for this weekend’s game against Troy after he underwent surgery to repair a fracture in his left thumb, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Chubb had screws inserted to repair the fracture and a determination on how much time he will miss will be made on Tuesday according to his mother who was quotes in the report from the AJC.

The true freshman running back is second to Todd Gurley for rushing yards on the team with 104 yards on only eight carries. His 13 yards per carry ranks second nationally through three weeks.

His 47-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter in the team’s Week 1 win vs. the Clemson Tigers showcased his blend of speed, power and acceleration as he has a promising future in Athens.

Maybe this will mean offensive coordinator Mike Bobo gives the best running back in the country more than the 20 carries Gurley had in the loss to the Gamecocks.

Georgia will be just fine without Chub for the home game vs. Troy as the team will incorporate fellow freshman Sony Michel into the game plan more after he had four carries for 18 yards and one reception for 33 yards in the team’s 35-38 loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks. The 5-11, 208-pound Michel has 14 touches for 104 yards and one touchdown this season.

The loss of Chubb could also mean more carries for Keith Marshall who has been the forgotten man in the Georgia backfield this season as he works his way back to top form after ACL surgery less than one year ago. Marshall, however, has not been the same player he was prior to the injury and has just seven carries for 10 yards.

Georgia hosts the Tennessee Volunteers and Vanderbilt Commodores the next two weeks before traveling to take on the undefeated Missouri Tigers on Oct. 11, so even if Chubb requires three weeks to get back, the schedule is favorable for the team to survive without him until the Missouri game.
