Charlie Strong and the Texas Longhorns may have problems creeping up on the football field, but the power of the Texas Longhorns name still runs deep. Tuesday served as the latest reminder of the pull that the burnt orange has in the state of Texas.

Why was that the case? On Tuesday morning the Longhorns offered 3-star Safety Jamile Johnson out of South Oak Cliff (Dallas, TX) High School. Scant hours later and Johnson was a verbal commitment to Charlie Strong and the Longhorns program.

However, this wasn’t the first commitment for Johnson, as he made a verbal pledge to the Oklahoma Sooners back in February, only to back out and commit to the North Carolina Tar Heels just last month.

The No. 23-ranked safety in the country made the third verbal commitment because of what the University of Texas meant to him.

“I just off the phone with Charlie Strong,” Johnson told 247Sports. “Texas has always been my dream school. I always grew up liking Texas.”

Johnson gives Texas a very versatile defensive back, as he is part of one of the deepest and most intriguing secondaries in Texas. Fellow defensive backs Takadrae Williams and X’zaviae Ausborne are committed to the University of Wisconsin.

Texas is also getting the No. 399-ranked player by the 247Sports composite and the No. 53-ranked player in the state of Texas.

For the Longhorns’ sake, they’re hoping the third commitment is the charmed one for Johnson. He also becomes the 16th verbal commitment to the Longhorns, who now have the No. 17-ranked class in the country and the No. 1-ranked class in the Big 12.
