There once was a time this season when the Milwaukee Brewers were so comfortably in first place in the National League Central that all they had to worry about was what their next “Hank the Dog” promotion was going to be.

Those happy days are long gone. A colossal collapse by the Brewers combined with the rise of the St. Louis Cardinals has Milwaukee on the outside of the playoffs looking in if the season ended today.

There is still a chance the Brewers could salvage things and reach the postseason, but if they don’t, could the seat for manager Ron Roenicke start to get a little bit warm?

Jon Heyman of CBS hears that it might, though the nature of their fall from grace would factor into the decision:

"Such a collapse (the Brewers led the NL Central by 6 ½ games and are now five back in the division and trying to catch the Pirates for the second wild card) would normally put a manager in major jeopardy, and if the Brewers fail to make the playoffs, word is, they will “take a hard look at everything.”"

Heyman notes that Roenicke is generally held in high regard in the organization, meaning that he would not be blamed for the team missing the playoffs. That’s for now, at least, but he will still be assessed to see if the Milwaukee front office thinks the manager lost the team.

"Still, it appears Roenicke is held in high regard by his bosses, one of whom pointed out that they still rank sixth overall in the NL…Others aren’t necessarily as impressed. “He seems to be in a low gear,” one scout said. In the end, though, it’ll be up to Roenicke’s superiors."

The Brewers can still end this season on a positive note, but if they don’t, there is at least an outside possibility that the responsibility will fall on Roenicke.
