The Louisville Cardinals suffered a setback last weekend when they were defeated by the Virginia Cavaliers. But some help could be on the way in the form of the return of running back Michael Dyer, and that return could happen as early as this Saturday against FIU, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal.

Back in early August, the former BCS Championship Game hero suffered a thigh bruise that has kept him out of action early on. However, head coach Bobby Petrino has been keeping a close eye on him in practice this week and he’s been pretty pleased with what he’s seen.

“We saw some really good things from him,” Petrino said. “The thing that’s hard on that is it’s not only the injury that he’s overcoming, it’s the soreness from not doing those things for five weeks — not running hard and cutting and doing all that. The rest of his body is sore.”

Petrino would then go on to allude to the fact that Dyer playing or not could be a game-time decision.

“We have a lot of time before the game,” Petrino said.

This was the first full week of practice that Dyer has put in since the injury, which is a tremendous sign in and of itself.

After last week, there’s no doubt that this team could use a boost, and Dyer could help a ton, especially in opening up that vaunted Petrino passing game for quarterback Will Gardner.
