The Milwaukee Brewers entered their weekend series with the Pittsburgh Pirates in need of a sweep if they wanted to have a realistic chance to reach the postseason as a National League Wild Card. If they didn’t sweep the Pirates, they needed to at least win the series to give themselves an outside shot at a playoff spot.

The Brewers did neither of those things, instead losing two out of three games. They have not technically been eliminated, but they will need to win out and have either the Pirates or the San Francisco Giants fall on their faces this week to have a chance.

Here are the updated National League Wild Card standings, which are officially down to three teams:

  1. San Francisco Giants – 84-71, — WCGB
  2. Pittsburgh Pirates – 84-71, — WCGB
  3. Milwaukee Brewers – 80-76, 4.5 WCGB

By defeating the Brewers on Sunday, the Pirates also decided the fates of two other National League teams. That win clinched a playoff spot for the St. Louis Cardinals, who look on track win the National League Central, and it officially eliminated the Atlanta Braves from postseason contention.

The Giants stumbled this weekend, dropping a road series to the San Diego Padres. Ultimately it appears that won’t matter, as a showdown between them and the Pirates in the National League Wild Card game looks like a sure thing.
